ROUTE - Leh - Spituk - Jingchen - Yurutse - Ganda La - Shingo – Skiu – Markha – Tchatchutse – Nimaling – Shang – Hemis – Leh
At the heart of Ladakh trekking lies the crown jewel – the Markha Valley Trek. We leave from Stok traversing the high country to visit some of the most exceptional landscape in Ladakh. This is a nice circular route and it
takes ten days of trekking time. Setting off from Leh you drive to Spituk, across the Indus River, and start the trek to Jingchen after which there are a few high passes like the Ganda La at 16,100 ft/4900 m and Kongmarula at 16,900 ft/5150 m. It takes a hardy and experienced trekker to do this trail.
I would recommend this trek particularly if you time it to avoid the peak tourist season, as it gets very crowded. And get yourself a guide at Leh.
The trek itself is thrilling. It’s set in part in the beautiful Hemis National Park, with two 4800-5000 m high passes to cross. There are waist-deep rivers to ford too. This trek satisfies the most demanding of adventurers. Add to that the pleasure of campsites set amongst aromatic shrubs and wild roses. You can spot bharal (blue sheep), nearly totally disguised on the bare mountains. Or chuckle at the antics of the phia (marmot) as you end up enjoying quite the perfect holiday.
